Mallika Sarabhai's The Colors Of Her Heart Enthralls New York Audience

New York, April 19

The Indo-American Arts Council presented an enchanting evening of Indian dance on April 17 with Mallika Sarabhai's The Colors of Her Heart, a spell binding, dance-theatre-multimedia production. It was presented at The Ailey Citigroup Theatre in New York City to a full house. Choreographed and directed by Mallika Sarabhai with the visual imagery and story creating skills of Yadavan Chandran, it incorporated the haunting lyrics of British musician Samia Malik who sang live on stage. Six women told their poignant stories bringing awareness into the issue of gender inequality and violence.

On stage, the performance moved from powerfully spoken monologues sharing true stories of the travails of women interspersed with group and solo dances in different techniques and formats. In the backdrop, a projection screen drew attention in parts to the larger than life silhouettes of the dancers and in parts to powerful words and phrases that women encounter in our society. With the music moving from the fast tempo of rap to soulful ghazals, the audience was taken on a hard hitting and emotional journey.

The show closed to tremendous applause from the crowd, receiving a standing ovation. The emotive pieces moved the audience to tears as many related or empathized to the stories being told on stage.

Speaking about the concert, Mallika Sarabhai said ".men weeping as much as women because it touches something that all of us have hidden from our own conscious minds because we need to get on with it. We are saying, you can deal with it and still get on with it, still better."

Earlier Chairman Dr. Nirmal Mattoo spoke about the IAAC leadership's goals for this year and about the team working diligently, carefully and aggressively to achieve the goals with a great slate of events across all Indian art forms. He also spoke about Indian dance, about Mallika Sarabhai's dance innovations and the social activism through her performances.

Mallika Sarabhai is one of India's leading choreographers and an accomplished Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dancer, who has specialized in using the arts for social change and transformation.She first came to international notice when she played she played the role of Draupadi in the Peter Brook's play The Mahabharata for 5 years, first in French and then English, performing in France, North America, Australia, Japan and Scotland. Mallika has won many accolades during her long career, the Golden Star Award is one of them, which she won for the Best Dance Soloist, Theatre De Champs Elysees, Paris 1977. As well as a dancer, Sarabhai is a social activist. She manages the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts located at Ahmedabad, a centre for the arts and for the use of arts as a language for behavior change

What do all women across the world share as experiences? Whatever the color of their skins, whatever their language and culture, the single identity that leads to their exploitation and violence against them is their gender. With songs in Urdu and English and stories that are both personal and universal, the heartful composition draws you into the world of women and their lives, dwelling on their experiences of vulnerability, love, pain, rejection, discrimination, and violation.

The ballet shifts between powerfully spoken monologues as accounts of the performers, group and solo dances, emotive pieces, even a ghazal that come together rhythmically with the bilingual live music by Samia Malik. The pieces reflect upon the common thread that binds all women, bringing together not just the stories of six women, but the pains, travails and victories of women of all nations.

The Colors of Her Heart plays at The Ailey Citigroup Theatre on 405 W 55th St, New York, NY 10019. Th show starts at 7PM and there will be a talkback with the Mallika Sarabhai, Yadavan Chandran and Samia Malik at the end of the show at 8:15PM.
